It’s great to see brands doing something a little different with their online stores and the new Lands End online store is more of an experience than website which is great. In a beautifully art directed “island” setting you can browse through the range of swimwear amongst some stunning visuals and very intuitive navigational features for browsing the products. Check out the site here.

    Extending the buying experience outside of the flat ecommerce UI is needed. But, given the fast and intuitive competitive shopping experiences at GAP and JCrew among others, I can’t imagine this audience waiting for this monster to load. It’s not that pleasant. There is also a missing piece when you click out of the microsite to buy and into the store; you are delivered to the product page, but you have to reselect a number of criteria to purchase. I’m expecting the shopping experiences online to evolve into something more emotional, but this falls short.

    These interactive shopping sites are creative but they have to be well done to be effective. I remember a while back, Aeropostale had an interactive “house” you could shop in. It was horribly confusing and irritating. To me, the best in well-executed creative advertising comes from the billboard-outdoor area.
